To determine the appropriate length for your Mast Mate, follow these steps:

1. Measure the Distance:
- Attach a light line to your main halyard.
- Hoist the halyard to the masthead.
- Mark the line at a spot below the boom and just above the deck of the boat.
- Lower the halyard and measure the marked line. This measurement is longer than the 'P' dimension of your mainsail, from the masthead to the boom by the distance the boom is off the deck.

2. Select Your Mast Mate:
- Choose a Mast Mate based on this measurement. The ladder you choose should be at least this measurement so that you can comfortably reach the lower steps of the ladder from the deck.
- If the standard Mast Mate length is slightly longer than needed, the excess length can rest on the deck without any issue.
